Taylor Fritz looks to continue his impressive form when he plays Andy Murray in the second round of the Citi Open on Friday.

The world number nine was 3-5 during a modest grass-court season, in which he suffered an early exit at Wimbledon last month.

However, he responded by launching his hard-court campaign with a second ATP title of the season in Atlanta.

It was also a second triumph in his homeland for the American, who was victorious at Delray Beach earlier in 2023.

Fritz, who beat Zachary Svajda 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round this week, was a commanding 6-1, 6-3 winner in his only previous encounter with Murray at last year’s National Bank Open in Montreal.

The three-time grand slam champion has captured three Challenger Tour titles this season – at Nottingham, Surbiton and Aix-en-Provence – while he defeated Alexander Zverev on the way to reaching the Doha final.

Murray could well have descended on Wimbledon as a seed but for his early exit at the hands of Alex de Minaur at Queen’s Club a fortnight earlier, and was unfortunate to narrowly lose to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Nevertheless, the 36-year-old responded with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Brandon Nakashima in round one, and will be eager to build momentum ahead of the US Open, where he claimed his maiden major crown 11 years ago.

Winner plays Christopher Eubanks or Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Play gets underway at around 7pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Stadium Court.
