Katie Boulter produced a really good victory against Nuria Brancaccio to progress to the second round of qualifying for Roland-Garros, can she go further?
Boutler’s win perhaps reminds us that even though clay court tennis is different to on different surfaces, class can still prevail. Boulter has been in good form, making back-to-back finals in Japan on hard courts before coming over to Paris for qualifying.
Teenager Ashlyn Krueger is looking to make it back-to-back British scalps after taking out Yuriko Lily Miyazaki in the opening round. Krueger had a good run at Charlottesville recently as well as a couple of good wins in Charleston, though the clay there isn’t quite the same as she is encountering here in France.
The players actually met at the same stage of qualification of the US Open last year. Krueger prevailed in straight sets on that occasion. Boulter will have to produce a really strong performance to turn that around, especially on her least favourite surface. Krueger should be favoured to progres to the final round of qualifying.
The match gets under way from around 3pm BST on Wednesday May 24.
