Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of landing his maiden French Open title this fortnight were ended by defeat to Novak Djokovic.
The world number one was among the favourites to win the season’s second slam in Paris, where he was beaten by Alexander Zverev in last year’s quarter-finals.
Alcaraz had already triumphed three times on clay this season – doing so in Madrid, Barcelona and Buenos Aires – while also winning the Indian Wells Masters.
The 20-year-old dropped just a single set during his victories over Flavio Cobolli, Taro Daniel, Denis Shapovalov, Lorenzo Musetti and Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to the semi-finals.
But an untimely injury proved crucial as he fell in four to the imperious Serbian, Novak Djokovic, in the last four.
