The evening match at Roland-Garros on Monday will see Alexander Zverev take on Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the French Open quarter-finals.
It would be a third consecutive quarter-final at Roland-Garros for Zverev. The German hasn’t had the greatest of seasons, and hasn’t looked totally convincing here either, but has found a way to make it through to this stage.
Dimitrov has made a career out of flattering to deceive but this run has already equalled his best at this tournament. He reached the fourth round in 2020 before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Zverev leads the head-to-head 3-1 between the pair. However, only one of those matches has come since 2016, and even that was in indoor hard court conditions, so not particularly relevant to this clash.
The German is the player, though, with the better history on the dirt. His career stats on this surface are far in advance of Dimitrov’s and it can be argued that Zverev also has the more relevant experience with various Masters titles, recent French Open semi-finals, and a Grand Slam final under his belt.
Zverev is the deserving favourite here and is worth supporting to progress to the next round.
Play gets underway at around 7:15pm BST on Monday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Phillipe Chatrier at Roland Garros.
