Novak Djokovic looks to maintain his perfect record over Marton Fucsovics when they collide in the French Open second round on Wednesday.

The Serb has won all four of his previous meetings with the Hungarian, including a straight-sets victory in the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals – ending his opponent’s best ever performance at a grand slam.

Despite a wonderful start to 2023 – triumphing in Adelaide and Melbourne after winning 15 straight matches – Djokovic arrived at Roland Garros having suffered four defeats in his last seven outings.

Nevertheless, his quest to surpass Rafael Nadal and land his 23rd major – and third French Open crown – began in typically commanding fashion, the third seed hitting 41 winners and converting five out of 12 break points on the way to a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1) victory over debutant Aleksandar Kovacevic.

That made it 19 successive first-round victories at the season’s second slam for the 36-year-old, while the only time he failed to progress beyond round two was on debut in 2005.

Meanwhile, Fucsovics overcame home favourite Hugo Grenier in four sets to secure his fifth venture to the second round in six appearances.

Although, the world number 83 has only advanced further on one previous occasion, doing so on his way to reaching the last 16 in 2020.

Claiming a huge scalp here would see him match his performance at the Australian Open earlier in a campaign in which he won a Challenger Tour event in Canberra, as well as beating the likes of Alex De Minaur on the way to reaching round four in Indian Wells.

Play gets underway at around 7.15pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros.
