Novak Djokovic begins his quest to regain the French Open title when he takes on debutant Aleksandar Kovacevic in the opening round on Monday.

A champion at Roland Garros in 2016 and 2021, a third coronation in Paris this year would see Djokovic surpass the absent Rafael Nadal with his 23rd grand slam singles triumph.

The Serb enjoyed a blistering start to 2023, capturing the Australian Open and Adelaide International titles while also reaching the semi-finals in Dubai as he won each of his first 15 matches.

Although, a couple of injury niggles – as well as being forced to miss the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open due to being unvaccinated from COVID-19 – prevented him from building on that momentum and seen him surrender top spot in the ATP rankings.

Djokovic arrives in the French capital for the 19th successive year having lost four of his last seven matches, including a quarter-final defeat by Casper Ruud in Rome last time out.

Nevertheless, he has never lost in the first round at Roland Garros, and will be a heavy favourite to extend that run against world number 114 Kovacevic.

The debutant has also endured a difficult recent run of form, losing his last five matches. However, he will definitely embrace the challenge of Djokovic on what will be his first appearance in a grand slam main draw.

It is the American’s latest achievement of a ground-breaking season, in which he has already won his first Challenger Tour titles in Cleveland and Texas, as well as making his ATP Masters 1000 main draw bow at Indian Wells.

The winner of this match will play either Marton Fucsovics or Hugo Grenier in the second round of the 2023 French Open.

The match gets underway at 12.15pm on Monday May 29 and will be contested over the best of five sets at Roland Garros.
