Roger Federer will be looking for his first victory on clay this season when he takes on Denis Istomin in the opening round of the 2021 French Open.
Denis Istomin has struggled for consistency on clay this season, but he found some form of late. He has won all three matches in the qualifying stages for the French Open, while dropping just one set in the process. Istomin’s most recent appearance at Roland Garros was in 2019 when he lost in five sets against Roberto Bautista-Agut.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer tried to warm up a little bit ahead of the French Open, but he suffered an unexpected loss in the 2nd round of the Geneva Open at the hands of Pablo Andujar. Although Federer doesn’t have big expectations for the French Open, he did well to reach the Semi-Finals in his last appearance in 2019.
The Swiss legend is continuing his comeback from two arthroscopic right knee surgeries and is hoping to be back closer to full fitness in time for Wimbledon later this summer.
Although Federer uses the French Open as a build-up for the second half of the season, he should be able to secure a straight-set victory over world number 337 Istomin at the price of 4/5.
