Karolina Pliskova suffered a shock 6-2 6-2 defeat against world number 227 Leolia Jeanjean as the seeds continued to tumble at the French Open on Thursday.

Eighth seed Pliskova was the highest-profile casualty at Roland Garros, where ninth seed Danielle Collins also bowed out at the hands of compatriot Shelby Rogers.

It marks the first time in the history of the season’s second Slam that seven of the WTA’s top 10 players have been eliminated during the opening two rounds.

Wimbledon finalist Pliskova, who missed the first two months of this season with a hand injury, suffered her first clay-court defeat in a decade against a player ranked outside the world’s top 200.

Meanwhile, Jeanjean became the lowest-ranked player to beat a top-10 opponent at Roland Garros since Conchita Martinez defeated Lori Mcneil in 1988.

Former champions Jelena Ostapenko and Simona Halep were also eliminated; going down in three sets against Alize Cornet and Qinwen Zheng respectively.

There were no such problems for the irrepressible Iga Swiatek, who registered her 30th successive victory after putting Alison Riske to the sword 6-0 6-2.

The 2020 champion, whose last defeat came against Ostapenko in Dubai 100 days ago, became the first player to win 13 consecutive matches as the WTA’s world number one since Serena Williams in 2015.

Aryna Sabalenka also prevailed in straight sets against Madison Brengle – taking just over an hour to wrap up victory – while second seed Paula Badosa needed three to see off Kala Juvan 7-5 3-6 6-2.

Jessica Pegula came through 6-1 5-7 6-4 against Anhalina Kalinina, as Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys overcame Maria Volynets and Carolina Garcia respectively in straight sets.

Over in the men’s draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas survived another tough test against world number 143 Zdenek Rolar – prevailing 6-3 7-6(8) 6-7(3) 7-6(7) – while Andrey Rublev also downed Federico Dalbonis in four sets, as did Jannik Sinner against Roberto Carballes Baena.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud eased through in straight sets against Laslo Djere and Emil Ruusuvuori respectively, and two-time quarter-finalist Marin Cilic advanced to round three for the first time since 2018 after beating Marton Fucsovics 4-6 6-4 6-2 6-3.

Hubert Hurkacz was a commanding 6-1 6-4 6-2 winner over Marco Cecchinato; ensuring each of the ATP’s top 12 seeds will appear in round three in the French capital for the first time since 2009.
