Rafael Nadal will begin his French Open swansong with a blockbuster first-round clash against the in-form Alexander Zverev at Roland Garros.

The 14-time champion, who is set to call time on his glittering career in the coming months, will renew his rivalry with the three-time semi-finalist in the pick of the opening-round ties at the season’s second major.

It is two years since the notorious last-four meeting between the players on Court Philippe Chatrier, where a classic looked set to unfold until Zverev suffered a horrifying ankle injury at the conclusion of the second set.

The German will be desperate to bury the ghost as he looks to continue his impressive form, having recently triumphed at the Italian Open for his first ATP Masters title in three years.

Elsewhere, world number one Novak Djokovic begins his latest quest for a record-breaking 25th grand slam against French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert, while Australian Open champion – and second seed – Jannik Sinner faces a tricky opener in 2023 Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks.

Another tasty clash pits 2016 runner-up Andy Murray, who has recently recovered from an ankle injury, against 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka. The winner could take on Cameron Norrie with the 32nd seed taking on Pavel Kotov.

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz awaits the identity of his first-round opponent, while 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev play Marton Fucsovics and Dominik Koepfer respectively.

Casper Ruud – runner-up in the last two years – begins his mission to go one better against Jakub Mensik, with sixth seed Andrey Rublev facing Taro Daniel and Holger Rune locking horns with Dan Evans.

Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek headlines the women’s draw as she seeks a fourth title in five years at Roland Garros.

A qualifier or lucky loser awaits the world number one in the opening round, though she could face fellow four-time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka in round two, while third seed Coco Gauff also awaits the identity of her opening opponent.

Reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka begins against world number 101 Erika Andreeva, as fourth seed Elena Rybakina and the in-form Danielle Collins face Greet Minnen and Caroline Dolehide respectively.

Ons Jabeur goes up against Sachia Vickery and former semi-finalist Maria Sakkari plays Varvara Gracheva, with reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova opening against Rebeka Masarova.

Other eye-catching ties pit Elina Svitolina against Karolina Pliskova and former world number two Paula Badosa against Katie Boulter, as 2017 winner Jelena Ostapenko takes on Jaqueline Cristian.
