Last year’s French Open runner-up is back on the march but can she see off an in-form opponent?
The sixth seed took a while to get going against Spaniard Rebeka Masarova but found her form in the final two sets to run out a 3-6 6-1 6-2 winner. Whilst it may not be enough to bring her back to her best, it will at least feel good for Gauff to get that winning feeling again.
A second-round match against Julia Grabher wouldn’t usually be enough to concern a top player like Gauff. However, the Austrian is on a really strong run of form on the clay. With a game perfect for the dirt, Grabher reached the final in Rabat on Saturday before continuing that form with a dismissal of Arantxa Rus in the first round in Paris.
Gauff’s clay record in 2023 is only mediocre, despite it being, historically, her most successful surface to play on. Her career win rate on the surface is around 69%, which Grabher has also won at on clay in the last twelve months, albeit on a generally lower grade of match due to her ranking meaning that she has to qualify more many top events.
Gauff will not have this all her own way to reach the third round. There is a chance of an upset here and this will be a key match to watch on the stream at around 1.30pm BST on Thursday.
