Maria Sakkari is the highest-ranked player left on the women’s side. The Greek has struggled for results prior to the French Open 2021, but she has been a completely different player on the Parisian clay. She had to play against two accessible opponents in the opening rounds in the shape of Zavatska and Paolini, but leveled up her game in the most recent three matches. She needed three sets against Elise Mertens in the third round, but then bounced back with two splendid straight-set victories against Sofia Kenin and Iga Swiatek.

The Czech has won the title in Strasbourg towards the end of May and followed this up with five impressive wins here in Paris. She defeated the likes of Kristina Pliskova, Alexandrova, Svitolina, Stephens and Gauff. Her most recent four victories were clean and sharp as Barbora dropped just 21 games in the process.
