Cameron Norrie is aiming to break new ground when he faces Lorenzo Musetti in the third round of the French Open on Friday.
It promises to be an intriguing battle between the players seeded 14th and 17th respectively this fortnight, with a place in the last 16 at Roland Garros on offer.
As of yet, that is uncharted territory for Norrie, who is looking to make further strides in grand slams having reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last year.
The British number one has endured contrasting fortunes in his first two matches at this season’s clay-court slam.
He was in danger of falling at the first hurdle when he trailed home favourite Benoit Paire by two sets to one on Monday, but dug deep to eventually prevail a 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 winner after three hours and 36 minutes.
The 27-year-old also rallied from 4-2 down in the deciding set but, despite the gruelling nature of that match, then swept Lucas Pouille aside in round two 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.
But his sternest test yet is around the corner, with Musetti looking to reach round four for the second time in only his third appearance here.
The Italian reached the last 16 on debut two years ago, and is yet to drop a set this year following his command wins over Mikael Ymer and Alexander Shevchenko.
And he arguably enters this clash with a slight psychological advantage, having come from behind to beat Norrie on his way to reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona in April.
Musetti has generally excelled on clay this season. Indeed, he defeated Novak Djokovic en route to the Monte Carlo quarter-finals, with his other two last-eight appearances of the campaign also coming on surface in Marrakech and Buenos Aires.
The winner of this match will play either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or Denis Shapovalov in round four of the 2023 French Open.
Play gets underway at around 3pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Simonne-Mathieu at Roland Garros.
