Cameron Norrie looks to match his best French Open performance when he plays Lucas Pouille in the Second Round at Roland Garros on Wednesday.
The British number one is eager to break new ground at the clay-court major, where he is aiming to progress beyond the last 32 for the first time.
Norrie was in danger of falling at the first hurdle when he trailed home favourite Benoit Paire by two sets to one on Monday. But the 14th seed dug deep to eventually prevail a 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 winner after three hours and 36 minutes.
The 27-year-old also rallied from 4-2 down in the deciding set but, despite the gruelling nature of that match, the fact he came through it will give him confidence and momentum to build on
A winner in Rio de Janeiro and runner-up in Buenos Aires and Auckland this season, Norrie will now look to avenge the four-set defeat he suffered against Pouille at this stage of his maiden French Open campaign five years ago.
The former world number 10 is making his 10th appearance at his home major, but looking to reach round three for only the third time.
Now ranked 675th in the ATP rankings following a lengthy battle with injuries, Pouille claimed his first win at a grand slam since the 2019 US Open in the opening round.
Indeed, he ran out a straight-sets victor against lucky loser Jurij Rodionov – ironically, the same player he had beaten in the final qualifying round just a few days earlier – and would love to extend his run by claiming the scalp of Norrie here.
The winner of this match will play either 17th seed Lorenzo Musetti or Alexander Shevchenko in the third round of the 2023 French Open.
Play gets underway at around 5.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Suzanne-Lenglen at Roland Garros.
