Novak Djokovic route to the final | Serb’s shot at glory ends in the quarter final

Defending champion Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the French Open at the quarter final stage by old adversary, Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic ended Rafael Nadal’s Paris dominance with a four-set win over the Spaniard in last year’s semi-finals, but Nadal returned the favour this year with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Djokovic was hoping to pick up his first grand slam win of the year at the tournament but his victory over Matteo Berrettini in the 2021 Wimbledon final remains his last big trophy win.

For Djokovic to go all the way in the French Open, he had a tricky run thanks to a top-heavy draw. Straight set victories over Yoshihito Nishioka, Alex Molčan and Aljaž Bedene set the Serb up with a tie against Diego Schwartzman. Djokovic once again won in straight sets, meaning he entered a mouth watering quarter final tie with Nadal.

It was certainly a match that delivered the drama and excitement we’ve come to expect from these two but Nadal came out on top, leaving Djokovic to switch his focus to retaining his Wimbledon title.
