Novak Djokovic takes on the marathon man of the 2023 French Open in Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas for a place in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros.

The great Serbian is beginning to get rolling now having not lost a set in the tournament so far. The two-time French Open champion still looks far from fluent in 70-80% of the matches but when it comes to the crunch, Djokovic continues to produce.

Varillas is a man who has also fallen into the crunch category in this tournament. All of his victories have been by three sets to two, the first two rounds coming back from two sets down, whereas the victory over Hubert Hurkacz was more of a topsy-turvy affair. By reaching the fourth round here, Varillas is the first Peruvian since Jaime Yzaga in 1994 to get to this stage in a Grand Slam.

The extra time that Varillas has spent on court will not be a help here. Djokovic has an eye on a potential semi-final meeting with Carlos Alcaraz and is not interested in wasting energy in the earlier rounds.

The Serbian has rarely had much trouble in dealing with so-called clay-court specialists, unless they are called Rafael Nadal, and this match should follow that same pattern.

Play gets underway at around 11.30am BST on Sunday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Phillipe Chatrier at Roland Garros.
