Ons Jabeur commences her latest quest for a maiden grand slam title when she faces Lucia Bronzetti in the French Open first round on Tuesday.

The Tunisian came agonisingly close to becoming the first Arab woman to win a major last season, losing out in the Wimbledon and US Open finals to Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek respectively.

Although, numerous injury issues have prevented her from truly building on that momentum this term.

Jabeur was, however, a winner in Charleston last month, while an untimely calf problem forced her to retire from her Stuttgart semi-final showdown with Swiatek.

The world number seven will hope to stay injury-free as she looks to advance beyond round four at Roland Garros for the first time.

But she faces a potential banana skin in the opening round against a player that has recently won her first WTA title.

Indeed, Bronzetti broke her duck in Rabat last time out and did so in style, defeating Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria and former US Open champion Sloane Stephens on her way to glory.

The Italian’s impressive form has seen her climb to 65th in the WTA rankings and she will hope do herself better justice in Paris this time around, having suffered a straight-sets defeat to former champion Jelena Ostapenko at this stage on debut 12 months ago.

The winner of this match will play either Oceane Dodin or Selena Janicijevic in round two of the 2023 French Open.

Play gets underway at 10.45am BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Roland Garros.
