Casper Ruud and Holger Rune lock horns in the French Open quarter-finals for the second year running when they collide on Wednesday.

Indeed, we are set for deja vu at Roland Garros, where Ruud prevailed in four sets when the Scandinavian pair faced off at this stage 12 months ago.

The Norwegian has won four of his five meetings with Rune – all of which have occurred on clay – although the Dane stopped the rot by prevailing in their semi-final showdown in Rome a fortnight ago.

It promises to be another tightly contested affair this time around, with 2022 runner-up Ruud targeting his 11th victory in 12 matches at Roland Garros.

The fourth seed dropped just two sets en route to his third major quarter-final as he continues to excel on clay.

He has now won 114 matches on surface since registering his first in 2017 – more than any other player on the ATP Tour during that time.

Rune will be desperate to deny him from recording another as he seeks his maiden grand slam semi-final appearance.

The first Danish man to reach multiple major quarter-finals since Kurt Nielsen in the 1950s, the sixth seed is also the first Scandinavian male to appear in the last eight of two slams before turning 21 since Stefan Edberg 38 years ago.

But Rune was certainly made to work hard for it, taking just shy of four hours to eventually shake off 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo in a dramatic fifth-set tie-break and prevail 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7).

A showdown with either Alexander Zverev or Tomas Martin Etcheverry awaits the winner of this mouth-watering tie in the 2023 French Open semi-finals.

Play gets underway at 7.15pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
