Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Muchova go head to head for a place in the French Open final at Roland Garros on Thursday.
Two players who had never previously progressed beyond round three at the clay-court major do battle in the first of the semi-finals, with a showdown against Iga Swiatek or Beatriz Haddad Maia on offer to the winner.
Indeed, this fortnight has produced a wonderful upturn in fortunes in Paris for both competitors, who are now just two wins away from lifting the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
Australian Open champion Sabalenka has continued her blistering start to 2023, in which she has now recorded 34 victories on the WTA Tour – one more than her tally for the entire 2022 season.
The world number two has reeled off 10 sets without reply on the way to becoming only the fifth player this century to win her first 12 grand slam matches of the year, after Jennifer Capriati, Serena Williams, Justine Henin and Victoria Azarenka.
Now a semi-finalist at all four majors, Sabalenka was a straight-sets winner when she previously faced Muchova, which also came at this stage in Zhuhai four years ago.
Although, it is worth noting she has only been victorious once in her four previous grand slam semi-finals, albeit the sole win came in Melbourne at the start of the year.
Muchova, meanwhile, is gearing up for only her second appearance at this stage of a major, matching her achievement at the 2021 Australian Open.
After defeating eighth seed – and 2021 semi-finalist – Maria Sakkari in the opening round, the Czech progressed through the quarter of the draw in which third seed Jessica Pegula also endured an early exit, dropping just a single set along the way.
Muchova also ended her quarter-final hoodoo in her straight-sets win over 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, having lost each of her previous five such matches, and will look to build on that momentum by reaching her maiden slam final.
Play gets underway at 2pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros.
