Iga Swiatek locks horns with history maker Beatriz Haddad Maia for a place in the French Open final at Roland Garros on Thursday.
The reigning champion is closing in on emulating the likes of Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles by successfully defending the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
She has done so in particularly dominant fashion, dropping just 15 games along the way – becoming the first player to lose 15 or fewer games en route to the French Open semi-finals since Conchita Martinez in 1995.
Two-time winner Swiatek, who also lifted the trophy in 2020, has now won 26 of her 28 matches at Roland Garros (92.9 per cent), with five-time champion Margaret Court the only woman to record a better winning percentage at the clay-court major during the Open Era (95.2).
The Pole has won three of her four previous grand slam semi-finals – losing to Danielle Collins at the 2022 Australian Open – and will be the favourite to continue that impressive strike rate here.
However, she will be wary of her ground-breaking opponent, who did win their only previous meeting at Toronto last year.
Haddad Maia is the first Brazilian woman in the Open Era to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals, and first overall from her nation to reach this stage of a slam since Gustavo Kuerten (also at the French Open) 22 years ago.
And it is safe to say she has earned the right to do so having dropped 58 games along the way – a tally only bettered by Elena Likhovtseva (64, 2005) and Tamara Zidansek (63, 2021) in Paris.
The left-hander has also become the first woman in the Open Era to advance to the semi-finals in the French capital after producing three-set comebacks in the three previous rounds. The 14th seed overcame Ekaterina Alexandrova, Sara Sorribes Tormo and seventh seed Ons Jabeur – recording her first top-10 victory in a major against the latter.
It promises to be a thoroughly intriguing contest with the winner to do battle with either Aryna Sabalenka or Karolina Muchova in Saturday’s French Open final.
The match gets underway from around 4pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
