Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman look to maintain their strong French Open form when they collide in the third round at Roland Garros.
With 90 places separating the players in the ATP rankings, neutrals would make world number five Tsitsipas a heavy favourite to prevail in one of the standout ties of the round.
But they both generally produce the goods at the clay-court major, where one impressive streak of form will end at the conclusion of this contest.
2021 runner-up Tsitsipas – and a semi-finalist in 2020 – is aiming to reach round four for the fifth year running while Schwartzman – also a semi-finalist three years ago – is eyeing his fourth such venture during that span.
The Greek – runner-up in Melbourne and Barcelona – is still seeking his first silverware of 2023, but has made a strong start in Paris having dropped just a single set across his victories over Jiri Vesely and Roberto Carballes Baena.
Tsitsipas has won four of his six meetings with Schwartzman including both of their showdowns on clay – most recently in last year’s Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals.
Once ranked as high as eighth in the world, the Argentine has slipped to 95th following a poor start to the season, in which a leg injury also hindered his progress.
He has lost his opening match in 11 events, including his last four preceding Roland Garros, and even failed to record a victory during the Golden Swing – traditionally one of his stronger periods on the calendar.
Things looked bleak again when he trailed 32nd seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles by two sets in round one, but rallied for a morale-boosting 1-6, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 win.
Schwartzman subsequently built on that momentum by overcoming Nuno Borges in straight sets, and will hope his previous solid form in Paris will stand him in good stead here.
The winner of this match will play either Fabio Fognini or Sebastian Ofner in round four at the 2023 French Open.
Play gets underway at around 5pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Suzanne-Lenglen at Roland Garros.
