Stefanos Tsitsipas launches his French Open campaign against Jiri Vesely in the opening round at Roland Garros on Sunday.

The Greek ace knows what it takes to go deep in the French capital, having reached the final two years ago.

There, he suffered a heart-breaking defeat against Novak Djokovic after surrendering a two-set advantage, while the Serb also denied him a maiden grand slam title in Melbourne earlier this year.

The fifth seed, who could face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, has reached at least the fourth round in each of his last four appearances at Roland Garros, also getting to the 2020 semi-finals.

He will certainly fancy his chances of coming through his opener against world number 452 Vesely, who is appearing in his first ATP tour-level match since a straight-sets defeat by Dan Evans at last year’s US Open.

The former world number 35 arrives with his only match practice of the calendar year coming at a couple of Challenger Tour events.

Nevertheless, this is familiar territory for the Czech, who is set for his 11th successive main-draw appearance at the season’s second major. Although, he has fallen at the first hurdle in four of the last five years.

The winner of this match will play Roberto Carballes Baena or a qualifier or lucky loser in the second round of the 2023 French Open.

The match gets underway from around 11.30am on Sunday May 28 and will be contested over the best of five sets at Roland Garros.
