Alexander Zverev v Lloyd Harris live stream with Bet365 | French Open preview

Alexander Zverev makes his return to the French Open when he plays Lloyd Harris in the opening round on Tuesday.

It was this time last year that Zverev was closing in on potentially claiming his maiden grand slam title, only to see the opportunity cruelly snatched away from him.

At the climax of the second set in his semi-final showdown with Rafael Nadal, Zverev’s screams echoed around Court Philippe-Chatrier as he crashed to the floor after the most untimely of ankle rolls, which was later found to be ligament damage.

The German left the court in a wheelchair and though due to return in September, a bone oedema would prevent him from playing any further part in the remainder of the campaign.

Zverev returned to action at the start of 2023, reaching semi-finals in Dubai and Geneva, while he saw match points go begging in his last-16 showdown with Daniil Medvedev at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The world number 27 will fancy another decent run at Roland Garros, where he has reached back-to-back semi-finals, and has won all three of his previous meetings with Harris including a straight-sets triumph in the 2021 US Open quarter-finals.

The South African can empathise with Zverev. He, too, missed from June onwards last season after undergoing wrist surgery.

Harris’ absence has seen him slip to 294th in the ATP rankings, though he did claim a notable scalp at the Australian Open by defeating 19th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the opening round.

The 26-year-old was also a Challenger Tour finalist in Thailand at the start of the year, and would love to continue his resurgence by denying Zverev here.

The winner of this match will play either Hugo Gaston or Alex Molcan in round two of the 2023 French Open.

Play gets underway at around 12pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets at Roland Garros.
