World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will take on Tomas Machac in the second round of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters on Saturday at 7.00pm (UK Time).
Although Medvedev didn’t win the Mexican Open a fortnight ago, he still managed to end Novak Djokovic’s dominance at the top of the ATP Rankings. The Russian has won 12 of his 15 matches on hard courts in 2022. Unfortunately, he has failed to win a single trophy during this run.
However, Daniil has been one of the best performers on tour over the past year, having reached at least the quarterfinal in every tournament he has competed in since July 2021.
Daniil’s most recent appearance on the tennis courts was in Acapulco where he lost in straight sets against Rafael Nadal. It was his second loss in one month at the hands of Spaniard, as he was also beaten by Rafa in the final of the Australian Open towards the end of January.
Meanwhile, Tomas Machac has already played 25 matches on hard courts in these first three months of 2022. The 21-year-old player started the year with a trophy in the Traralgon Challenger. Then, he followed this up with participation in the main draw of the Australian Open after winning three matches in the qualifying stage and one on the main draw.
Machac has also played two qualifiers here in Indian Wells where he defeated the likes of Albot and Marchenko. In addition, he demolished Alexey Popyring in the opening round and he is now facing a daunting task against World No.1, Daniil Medvedev.
The worrying thing is that Machac has failed to win both of his 2nd-round matches on the main tour so far this season.
