Emma Raducanu v Danka Kovinic live stream | WTA Indian Wells 2023 preview

Emma Raducanu aims to kickstart her 2023 season when she faces Danka Kovinic in the opening round of the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday.

A combination of injury and health problems have culminated in the former US Open champion enduring a tricky start to the calendar year.

An ankle problem forced her to retire in Auckland, while she withdrew from the inaugural Austin Open after contracting tonsillitis.

Ranked outside the cut-off for direct entry into the season’s maiden WTA 1000 event, the world number 77 arrives in California as a wildcard for what will only be her third tournament of the campaign.

It will also be her first competitive match since the second-round defeat by Coco Gauff at the Australian Open, although there were positives in that clash she can look to build on here.

Raducanu is aiming to reach the last 16 at Indian Wells for the first time, though the same can be said for her opponent.

Kovinic prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in their only previous encounter, which came in the last 64 at Melbourne Park 14 months ago.

The world number 62 is looking for momentum, having struggled to kick on in recent times after an initially positive start to 2023.

Kovinic was a semi-finalist in Auckland at the start of the campaign, while she also reached the quarter-finals in Lyon.

However, the Montenegrin arrives on a bit of a slump having lost in the qualifying rounds for the Dubai Tennis Championships, while she also suffered a first-round defeat at the hands of Heather Watson in Austin last time out.

The winner will take on 20th seed Magda Linette in the Second Round later this week.

The match gets underway from around 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of three sets in Indian Wells, California.
