Iga Swiatek resumes her Indian Wells Masters title defence with a tricky Last 32 clash against Bianca Andreescu on Tuesday.

One of the standout matches of the round sees two former champions go head to head with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.

Reigning champion Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman to successfully defend the crown since Martina Navratilova in 1991.

Her quest to do so began in emphatic fashion, as she took just over an hour to sweep Claire Liu aside 6-0, 6-1.

The runaway world number one dropped just a single game for the fifth time already this season, while she only lost 11 points in seven service games.

The Pole is now 13-3 in 2023 having already landed her maiden title of the calendar year in Doha, while she was runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova in Dubai last time out.

Swiatek prevailed in her only previous showdown with Andreescu, which came in Rome last year, winning 7-6(2), 6-0 in the quarter-finals on the way to lifting the trophy.

The Canadian claimed her maiden WTA title here in 2019, while she also went on to land the US Open crown at her first attempt later that year.

A shoulder injury has prevented Andreescu’s season from bursting into life. Despite reaching the semi-finals in Hua Hin, she arrived at Indian Wells having suffered successive first-round defeats in Doha and Dubai.

However, the world number 36 demonstrated strong character to stop the rot here, recovering from a set down to beat American wildcard Peyton Stearns 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The winner of this match will play either 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or Emma Raducanu in the last 16 of the Indian Wells Masters.

Play gets underway at around 1am GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets in California.
