Carlos Alcaraz launches his Miami Open title defence when he faces Facundo Bagnis in the Second Round on Friday.

The teenage sensation dropped just a single set as he landed his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown here 12 months ago, defeating the likes of Marin Cilic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud along the way.

Alcaraz is now looking to become only the fifth male player to successfully defend the title, after Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard will certainly be feeling confident of doing so, having returned to world number one following his triumph at Indian Wells last weekend.

That gave Alcaraz his second title of the season, adding to his success in Buenos Aires.

He was a 6-0, 6-4 winner in his only previous meeting with Bagnis, which came in last year’s Umag quarter-finals.

The Argentine, who overcame Felipe Meligeni Alves 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in round one, will be hoping a similarly deep run in a tour-level event is on his horizon.

Indeed, that victory over the Brazilian qualifier represented only his second such win since facing Alcaraz eight months ago.

The 32-year-old recently slipped to 100th in the ATP rankings, though his form has not been helped by injury struggles – he was notably forced to retire against Daniil Medvedev in last year’s French Open.

But claiming a scalp here would provide a timely springboard and momentum for him to potentially build on.

The winner of this match will play either 30th seed Maxime Cressy or Andy Murray’s conqueror Dusan Lajovic in the Miami Open third round.

Play gets underway from 7pm GMT on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Miami Gardens, Florida.
