There will be no flags displayed on the scoreboards of the Hard Rock Stadium for this ATP Miami Open semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov.
Medvedev is creating a great sequence for himself in getting to the latter stages of these events. If he is successful in winning this semi-final then it would be five finals in a row for the Russian former world #1.
Khachanov is developing something of a reputation for beginning to show up in the big events. This semi-final in Miami adds to the ones achieved in Australia and at the US Open at the last two major tournaments. However, he has yet to find the extra gears to be able to beat the biggest and best.
The data heavily favours Medvedev in the clash. Med has a 3-1 lead in the head-to-head, with Khachanov’s win coming indoors in 2018. Khachanov also has an awful record against top ten players, losing 18 of his last 19 matches against players ranked in that bracket.
On hard courts in the last year Medvedev has held serve 3.7% more than Khachanov, but his return game has been far more successful. Medvedev has broken his opponents 32% of the time, Khachanov is down at a more average 24%, an 8% difference.
One has to expect Medvedev to control this match and if he is able to find his distance and lock in at the back of the court, then there’s very little that Khachanov can do, as the younger Russian doesn’t tend to mix up his game enough to come forward confidently.
