A surprising semi-final in Miami as veterans Petra Kvitova and Sorana Cirstea face off for a place to face Elena Rybakina in the Miami Open final.
Kvitova is the more household name as a two-time former Wimbledon champion. Indeed, she was picked out in our outright preview as one to back at an insulting price of 100/1.
Sorana Cirstea, though, really has been a bolt from the blue. The Romanian had a good week last week in Indian Wells but this is her first WTA1000 level semifinal since Toronto in 2013.
There were definite signs of tiredness from the tall left-handed Czech player as she completed win over Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarter-finals. However, her reliable serve delivered when it was required, and did a lot of the heavy lifting to get her to the finish line. This Miami court is taking the lefty slice serve particularly well and Kvitova should still win a lot of points from that weapon.
The head-to-head between the pair is pretty even at 6-4 to Kvitova. The last meeting was last year in Cincinatti with Kvitova winning that match on the way to the final. Cirstea had dominated the previous two encounters though, both at the Australian Open.
From a data perspective, both women hold serve well, Kvitova 1% better than Cirstea, and the Czech is also 1.5% better than Cirstea in breaking their opponents over the course of a year on hard courts.
