Carlos Alcaraz begins his quest for a seventh title of 2023 when he plays Ben Shelton in round two of the National Bank Open on Wednesday.
The world number one has been the standout player on the ATP this season with an impressive 47-4 record.
Along the way, he has triumphed at Wimbledon, Indian Wells, Madrid, Barcelona, Queen’s Club and Buenos Aires.
This will be his first match since landing a second major title at Wimbledon, where he made a huge statement by recovering from losing the opening set to stun seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final.
Although, the Spaniard will be hoping for better fortunes this time around in Toronto, where his debut appearance last year ended at the first hurdle following defeat by Tommy Paul.
Paul’s compatriot Shelton has the unenviable task of aiming to become only the fifth player to beat Alcaraz this season after Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie and Florian Marozsan.
The American appeared on course to enjoy a promising season on the ATP Tour when he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals in January.
But the world number 41 has failed to subsequently kick on, losing his opening match at 11 tournaments since.
In fact, the 7-6(1), 6-4 win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles in round one represented only his sixth success in 22 matches, and he must address that to have any chance of embarking on another decent run at the US Open – his home slam – later this month.
The winner of this match will play either 15th seed Hubert Hurkacz or Miomir Kecmanovic in the National Bank Open last 16.
Play gets underway at around 12am BST and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
