Alexander Zverev and Tallon Griekspoor look to build on their strong recent form when they collide in the National Bank Open first round on Tuesday.

Two of the in-form players on the ATP Tour go head to head in one of the standout ties of the opening round in Toronto.

Zverev is fresh from landing his first title of the season in Hamburg, while Griekspoor was denied his third silverware after losing out to Dan Evans in the Washington final.

Along with three-time champion Andy Murray and Daniil Medvedev, who lifted the trophy in 2021, Zverev is one of only three former winners of the ATP Masters 1000 event in this year’s draw.

The German lifted the trophy in 2017 – beating Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 in the final – before reaching successive quarter-finals in 2018 and 2019.

This is the former US Open finalist’s first appearance in Toronto since then, and he will target another strong run in preparation for his return to Flushing Meadows later this month.

Meanwhile, Griekspoor finds himself in uncharted territory. Indeed, this is his first time appearing in the main draw of this event.

The Dutchman is one of eight multiple winners on the ATP this season – along with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev – having triumphed in Pune and s’Hertogenbosch.

And he almost bounced back from his first-round Wimbledon exit by making it three in Washington, only to lose out to a resurgent Evans.

Nevertheless, Griekspoor did prevail when he met Zverev earlier this year – also on hard court – coming from behind to win in three sets on his way to reaching the Rotterdam semi-finals.

The winner of this match will play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the National Bank Open.

Play gets underway at around 7pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
