Former world number one Serena Williams will take on Belinda Bencic in the Second Round of the 2022 National Bank Open in Toronto on Wednesday.

All eyes will be on 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams as she looks to roll back the years and challenge for a fourth Canadian Open crown.

The 40-year-old made global headlines earlier in the week when she announced her intention to retire from tennis following the upcoming US Open.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Williams admitted “the countdown has begun” towards the end of her playing career and that she is ready to focus on family life.

Serena has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other player in the Open Era and is one adrift of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

Having missed out on this year’s Australian Open and French Open before suffering a First Round exit at Wimbledon, she registered her first singles win in 14 months on Monday, defeating Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-3, 6-4.

Williams, runner-up here in 2019, now comes up against Swiss star Bencic, the former world number four and 2019 US Open semi-finalist.

Now ranked world number 12, Bencic began by defeating Tereza Martincova 6-4, 6-2 in Round One and is looking to claim this title for the first time since 2015 – when she defeated Williams along the way.

Williams has won two of their three previous meetings, including their most recent at the 2017 Australian Open.

Either eighth seed Garbiñe Muguruza or 37-year-old Estonian Kaia Kanepi will await the winner in the Third Round.
