Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios will square off in the Second Round of the National Bank Open 2022 on Wednesday.
Medvedev comes into this tournament on the back of four consecutive wins in Los Cabos where he did well to lift his first trophy on hard courts this year.
It was surprising to see that Medvedev has not dropped a single set in Los Cabos given the fact that he hadn’t played a single match in almost two months.
The North American hard court swing is definitely one of Medvedev’s favourites. It was here, after all, when he introduced himself to the tennis world back in 2019.
Three years ago, the Russian managed to reach six consecutive finals in Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, Flushing Meadows, St. Petersburg, and Shanghai.
Medvedev will be looking to defend his title here at the National Bank Open, but he will face an in-form Kyrgios.
The Australian star reached his first major final at Wimbledon a month ago and then he wrapped up a title in Washington.
Overall, Kyrgios has lost just once in his last 14 matches on grass and hard courts. In the opening round of this year’s National Bank Open, he secured a straight-set victory over Sebastian Baez, which was actually his third consecutive win without losing a set.
Kyrgios has won two of the three meetings with Medvedev, but he lost the most recent one at the Australian Open back in January.
