Andy Murray will take on American ace Taylor Fritz in the First Round of the 2022 National Bank Open in Montreal on Tuesday.

Former world number one Murray has made immense strides after career-threatening hip surgery a few years ago, returning to the world’s top 50 courtesy of a series of strong runs in recent months.

Murray has progressed to two finals this year, most recently on his beloved grass surface in Stuttgart, narrowly losing out to Matteo Berrettini.

The 35-year-old is no stranger to success in Canada, having picked up this title on three occasions (most recently in 2015) and returns as one of four wildcards in the field.

Murray was beaten in the opening round in Washington last week, going down to eventual semi-finalist Mikael Ymer, and will be keen to bounce back at the first time of asking.

However, he faces a formidable test against the number ten seed – who reached his first Grand Slam Quarter-Final at Wimbledon last month – losing out to Rafael Nadal in an epic fifth set tie break.

Fritz has already picked up an ATP 1000 title this season at Indian Wells, defeating Nadal in the final, but comes into this event having pulled out of his last match through illness.

The top-ranked US player retired at 4-1 in the decisive set of his Last 16 clash with Britain’s Dan Evans at the Citi Open.

Fritz is yet to register a win on hard court in Canada and will look to end that unwanted record in his first career meeting with Murray.

Either world number 24 Frances Tiafoe or Benjamin Bonzi will await the winner in the Second Round.
