Andy Murray resumes his quest for a fourth National Bank Open title when he locks horns with Max Purcell in round two on Wednesday.

The three-time champion, who lifted the trophy in 2009, 2010 and 2015, is one of the most successful players in the history of the ATP Masters 1000 event.

The 36-year-old will certainly be growing in confidence ahead of the US Open, where he landed his first major title 11 years ago.

But he faces a player that has already claimed a notable scalp this week, with Purcell taking out 10th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.

It gave the world number 78 only his third tour-level victory of the season, while halting a run of five successive first-round exits.

Purcell has fared significantly better on the Challenger Tour; the Australian winning three successive titles in Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune as well as reaching finals in Lille, Gwangju and Busan.

But victory over a three-time major winner here would certainly provide his confidence with a timely boost on the ATP Tour.

An Italian last-16 opponent awaits the winner in either seventh seed Jannik Sinner or former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.

Play gets underway at around 9pm BST and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court 1.
