Iga Swiatek looks to record her third straight victory over Karolina Pliskova when they collide in round two of the National Bank Open on Wednesday.

The world number one has prevailed in both previous meetings between the players, including a resounding double-bagel victory in the 2021 Rome Masters final.

Swiatek also came from behind in their Stuttgart quarter-final earlier this year on the way to winning one of four WTA titles in 2023.

The world number one, who was also triumphant in Doha and the French Open, added to her tally with victory on home soil in Warsaw last time out, and will be eager to build on that momentum ahead of her US Open defence later this month.

And she is looking to break new ground at this event, having not yet progressed beyond the last 16 in her two previous appearances.

By contrast, Pliskova boasts strong form in the WTA 1000. Runner-up to Camila Giorgi in 2021, she was beaten by Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semi-finals of last year’s event.

And another strong run this week would certainly breathe new life into the two-time major finalist’s season following a difficult spell of form.

Indeed, the Czech’s first-round win over Zhu Lin represented only her second victory in eight matches since reaching the Stuttgart quarter-finals – the other coming at Eastbourne after opponent Elise Mertens retired injured.

The former world number one will want to quickly address that ahead of the US Open, where she was runner-up to Angelique Kerber seven years ago.

The winner of this match will play either 14th seed Karolina Muchova or Sorana Cirstea in the last 16 of the National Bank Open.

Play gets underway at around 5.30pm BST and will be contested over the best of three sets on Court Central.
