Former champion Andy Murray will take on Matteo Berrettini in the Third Round of the 2022 US Open on Friday.

Former world number one Murray has made immense strides after career-threatening hip surgery a few years ago, returning to the world’s top 50 courtesy of a series of strong runs in recent months.

The Scot has progressed to two finals this year, most recently on his beloved grass surface in Stuttgart, narrowly losing out to none other than Berrettini.

The 35-year-old was beaten in the opening round in Washington before losing out to in-form Taylor Fritz at the same stage of the Canadian Open and lost from a set up against fellow Brit Cameron Norrie at the Cincinnati Masters.

Murray, champion here a decade ago, has appeared in all but two US Opens since 2005 and stormed through the opening round in straight sets against 24th seed Francisco Cerúndolo, before overcoming American wildcard Emilio Nava in four sets.

Berrettini has won 23 out of 32 matches so far this year, one more than Murray. He missed out on Wimbledon due to Covid, but recently played in Gstaad where he lost out to Casper Ruud.

He then lost in the opening round in both Montreal and Cincinnati, but kicked off the US Open with solid wins over Nicolas Jarry and Hugo Grenier.

This is now Berrettini’s 17th consecutive Third Round appearance at the Grand Slam level. His best performances here at the US Open were a Semi-Final appearance in 2019 a Quarter-Final run last year.
