Novak Djokovic will face familiar foe Kei Nishikori in the third round of the 2021 US Open on Saturday.
This will be the 20th time Djokovic meets Japanese star Nishikori in his career so far. The pair met in the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo Olympics recently when the Serbian secured a dominant 6-2,6-0 victory.
Djokovic maintained his undefeated record in the Second Round of the US Open with a comfortable straight-set win over Tallon Griekspoor.
Djokovic’s record in the third round of the US Open is 13-2, with these two defeats coming against Fernando Verdasco and Lleyton Hewitt back in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
Djokovic won all three Grand Slams earlier this year and winning the US Open this fortnight would make him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the Calendar Grand Slam.
Meanwhile, Nishikori has won comfortably against Salvatore Caruso in four sets in the opening round of the 2021 US Open. However, things got messy for Kei in the Second Round where he had to win in five sets against Mackenzie Donald despite he had a two-sets lead.
Kei holds an amazing 24-5 record in the five-setters in Grand Slams, but these long matches definitely affect his performance in the following days.
