Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka takes on Leylah Annie Fernandez in the Third Round of the 2021 US Open on Friday.
Fernandez did well to win a title on hard courts at the beginning of the year in Monterrey in Mexico. The last two years have been pretty good for the Canadian and her recent form on hard courts has been decent, having registered four victories in her last five matches.
Fernandez beat Ana Konjuh in straight sets in the first round of the 2021 US Open and then needed two hours to defeat Kaia Kanepi in the 2nd round.
Meanwhile, Osaka did nit have to play in the Second Round at Flushing Meadows after Olga Danilovic pulled out an hour before the match due to a medical issue. In the opening round, Osaka cruised to a straight sets (6-4, 6-1) win against Marie Bouzkova.
Osaka has struggled on her return after pulling out of the French Open, but New York is a place she loves. She won her maiden Grand Slam title in 2018 and then added another by beating Victoria Azarenka in the final last year.
