Four-time champion Rafael Nadal and Frances Tiafoe will square off in the fourth round of the 2022 US Open on Monday.

Nadal dropped the opening set against both Rinky Hijikata and Fabio Fognini in the first two rounds but stormed to a straight sets rout of Ricard Gasquet to make it 17 consecutive wins over the Frenchman.

Nadal is now in pole position to become the world number one next Monday after Daniil Medvedev lost to Nick Kyrgios on Sunday.

The Spaniard can secure the top spot if he wins the US Open but still has a chance to achieve that as long as Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud do not make it to the final.

Nadal has already won the Australian Open and the French Open this year and he now looks to be the main contender for the title here in Flushing Meadows.

Tiafoe’s recent form on hard courts reads nine victories and four defeats in 13 matches. He wasn’t able to progress past the third round in Atlanta, Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati recently, but he did it here in New York.

Tiafoe is yet to drop a single set in Flushing Meadows so far after beating Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler and Diego Schwartzman in straight sets.

His most recent Grand Slam campaign at Wimbledon and his previous two US Open campaigns have all ended in the round of 16. Unfortunately, he is two from 13 against top five players and has suffered defeats in all his previous seven meetings against top three players.
