Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova will square off in the third round of the 2022 US Open on Saturday.

Muguruza has not been at her best throughout 2022 as she was holding a record of just nine victories prior to the start of the US Open. The Spaniard defeated Clara Tauson and Linda Fruhvirtova this week in New York, which is the first time since February when she managed to link two consecutive victories.

She is yet to progress beyond the fourth round at the US Open and this matchup against Kvitova is one of the worst she could get. Muguruza has lost the last five meetings with Kvitova and her only victory against the Czech was at the WTA Finals in Singapore back in 2015.

On the contrary, Kvitova has won seven of her last eight matches on hard courts. During this run, she finished as a runner-up to Caroline Garcia in Cincinnati. Before coming to North America, the Czech ace lifted the title in Eastbourne before posting a Third Round finish at Wimbledon.

Here in New York, Petra Kvitova managed to beat Erika Andreeva in the opening round and was actually lucky to rest in the Second Round, as Anhelina Kalinina withdrew from the encounter.
