Petra Kvitova and Maria Sakkari will square off in the third round of the 2021 US Open on Saturday.
After a couple of early defeats at the Tokyo Olympics and National Bank Open in Montreal a month ago, Kvitova did well to link some consecutive victories recently. The Czech was forced to withdraw due to a GI issue in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters a fortnight ago, but looked solid in the first two rounds here in New York.
Kvitova began her US Open campaign with a 6-1,6-2 victory over Polona Hercog and followed this up with another straight-set win against Kristyna Pliskova in the second round. She is now in the third round of the US Open for the 11th time in 14 career appearances.
Sakkari has suffered defeats in the third round of the Olympics and National Bank Open a month ago, and she was also stunned by Kerber in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters. However, the Greek has registered back-to-back victories in straight sets against Kostyuk and Siniakova in the first two rounds of the 2021 US Open.
Sakarri held a 0-7 record in the 3rd round of Grand Slams until 2020, but she has improved that poor record over the past year. She finished fourth at the Australian Open and US Open 2020 and reached the semifinal of this year’s French Open.
