Emma Raducanu launches the defence of her US Open title with a clash against Alize Cornet at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

Raducanu rewrote the history books with her incredible debut triumph 12 months ago, defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final to become the first qualifier to win a major and only the second woman to win in her maiden appearance.

Since that landmark success, Raducanu has struggled to live up to the new level of expectation this season and will look to take inspiration from that formidable set of displays here last time out.

The Brit did reach the Quarter-Finals of the Washington Open earlier this month but was then beaten by Camila Giorgi in Round One in Toronto the following week.

The 19-year-old picked up confidence-boosting straight sets wins over Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams in Cincinnati a fortnight ago before bowing out at the hands of Jessica Pegula in Round Three.

Raducanu has suffered Second Round exits in all three majors this year and will be determined to make a strong fist of her title defence here.

World number 37 Cornet provides a tough opening test, having reached the Quarter-Finals of this year’s Australian Open – her best run in a Grand Slam to date.

The 32-year-old also reached the Fourth Round of Wimbledon and is one of the few players to have beaten world number one Iga Swiatek this season.

Cornet now looks to raise her game against in a bid to dethrone the reigning champion in what will be their first head-to-head meeting.

Either Kateřina Siniaková or Taylor Townsend will await the winner in the Second Round later in the week.
