French Open finalist Casper Ruud will take on world number 31 Karen Khachanov in the Semi-Finals of the US Open 2022 on Friday.
Ruud has secured back-to-back wins over Kyle Edmund, Tim van Rijthoven, Tommy Paul, Corentin Moutet, and Matteo Berrettini en route to the Semi-Finals. The Norwegian ace has secured only two straight-set victories at Flushing Meadows this fortnight.
Ruud has been one of the best performers among non-Big-Three players over the past two years. In addition, he is one of the two players that have reached more than one Semi-Final in Grand Slams this year.
The 23-year-old can become the new world number one on Monday even without winning the US Open title. In order to do that, he needs Carlos Alcaraz to lose his Semi-Final match against Frances Tiafoe.
It has been a tough path for Khachanov to get into his first-ever Grand Slam Semi-Final. The Russian has dropped at least one set in each of his five matches at the US Open so far. In addition, he had to play two five-set thrillers in the previous two matches against Pablo Carreno-Busta and Nick Kyrgios.
Khachanov had never reached the fourth round of the US Open in his previous seven attempts. Karen has lost both of his previous quarterfinal matches in Grand Slams at the French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2021.
The biggest title in Karen Khachanov’s career is the one in Paris that he managed to win it back in 2018.
