Carlos Alcaraz will take on Sebastian Baez in the opening round of the 2022 US Open in New York on Tuesday.
Alcaraz has been struggling for consistency over the past month, winning six and losing four of his last ten matches on clay and hard courts. He recently reached the Quarter-Finals in Cincinnati – where he lost to Cameron Norrie in three sets.
Alcaraz made his debut at the US Open last year and unfortunately was forced to retire from his Quarter-Final match against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Although he has not been at its best over the past few months, Alcaraz did well to reach at least the Quarter-Final stage of all three American hard court tournaments he entered this year.
Baez reached the final in Bastad on clay a month and a half ago but has failed to win a single match since then. The Argentine has suffered back-to-back eliminations in the opening rounds of Hamburg, Umag, Washington, Montreal, and Cincinnati. Furthermore, he has failed to win a single set in the previous three matches, all of them on hard courts.
Baez has reached the second round in all three Grand Slams this year, but he hasn’t played against a top five player in any of those matches.
