Serena Williams begins her final US Open campaign against Danka Kovinic in Round One at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion announced her intention to retire from tennis following the US Open and is set for an emotional farewell in New York.

Serena has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other player in the Open Era and is one adrift of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

She turned professional aged just 14 in 1995 and won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open, going on to dominate the women’s game in the proceeding years.

Williams has since secured a total of six singles titles at Flushing Meadows, as well as four runner-up finishes and four Semi-Final runs.

Having missed out on this year’s Australian Open and French Open before suffering a First Round exit at Wimbledon, Williams registered her first singles win in 14 months by defeating Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz at the Canadian Open before losing out to Belinda Bencic in straight sets.

The 40-year-old was then comfortably beaten by reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the opening round in Cincinnati but will be hoping for a fairy-tale finish in the event where it all began almost a quarter of a century ago.

Kovinic, however, will have other ideas as she looks to spoil the party and pull off the most notable win of her career to date.

The world number 80 has reached the Third Round of both the Australian Open and French Open this year but has not won a match since falling to Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.

Either number two seed Anett Kontaveit or Jaqueline Cristian will await the winner in the Second Round later in the week.
