Thiem vs Nagal is live from New York on Thursday 3 September, time TBC
Sumit Nagal is the first Indian man to win a main-draw match at a Grand Slam in seven years, and took a set from Roger Federer at last year’s US Open, but he will be up against it when he takes on second-seeded Dominic Thiem on Thursday.
After suffering a shock loss to Filip Krajinovic at the Western & Southern Open and progressing to the second round when Jaume Munar retired, Thiem is still looking for his first completed win since returning to competition.

Thiem vs Nagal: Preview
World no. 3 Thiem played a heavier schedule of exhibition matches during tennis’s six-month shutdown than just about anybody, which is about what you would expect from the perpetually over-scheduled Austrian, and yet his transition back to competition hasn’t been smooth.
Thiem is one of the very small handful of players who can be talked about as anything like a realistic challenger to tournament favourite Novak Djokovic, having reached three Grand Slam finals, beaten Djokovic at a major before (albeit on clay) and pushing the Serb to five sets in Melbourne. But the perception of his US Open chances took a hit when he lost 2-6, 1-6 to Filip Krajinovic at the Western & Southern Open. Krajinovic is a very talented player who’s better than his ranking, a former Paris Masters finalist who was having a great week (and is also into the third round of the US Open), but Thiem’s failure to win more than two points on his opponent’s serve didn’t make him look like a credible threat in New York.
The jury’s still out after Thiem’s first-round match against Munar, the world no. 105 retiring at 6-7(6), 3-6. But whether or not Thiem is your pick to reach the US Open final from the bottom half of the draw, he will realistically enter Thursday’s clash with Nagal as the overwhelming favourite.
Nagal has already achieved something impressive at this US Open, becoming the first Indian man since Somdev Devvarman at this same major in 2013 to win a Grand Slam main-draw match. His victory over Bradley Klahn in an ultimately one-sided match, winning 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, was also Nagal’s first main-draw Grand Slam victory.
A junior Wimbledon doubles champion, Nagal has won two Challenger titles and successfully qualified for the US Open last year, where he won the first set against Federer before losing in four. He is 4-6 in 2020, having won back-to-back matches once when he made the quarterfinals of the Prague Challenger two weeks ago before losing to Stan Wawrinka – again after taking the first set.
Nagal thrives on the big stage and loves taking on a top player, but he doesn’t really have the stamina or the right game to beat Thiem over the best of five sets, and this is a good test for the Austrian. Can he start strong, stay disciplined and get the straight-sets win he should record vs Nadal on Thursday?
