Carlos Alcaraz is looking to create history when he faces former winner Marin Cilic in the US Open fourth round on Monday.

The 19-year-old, who reached the last eight when he broke through at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago, aims to become the youngest player to reach back-to-back quarter-finals in the Open Era.

A winner of four ATP titles this season, the Spaniard is yet to drop a set in the Big Apple and has prevailed in both his previous showdowns with Cilic in 2022.

The 2014 champion has now reached the fourth round in all three Slams he has contested this year, having withdrawn from Wimbledon after testing positive for COVID-19.

Seeking a sixth US Open quarter-final, Cilic has won nine of his last 11 matches against Spanish opponents, but just five of his 24 most recent showdowns with top-five players.

Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal is eyeing a 10th appearance in the last eight in New York, while the four-time champion looks to go 23-0 in majors this term.

The second seed has won 21 of his last 22 matches against opponents from America, though Frances Tiafoe will be aiming to buck that trend.

The only remaining American in the men’s draw having reeled off nine sets without reply, Tiafoe is looking to become the youngest US Open quarter-finalist from his nation since Andy Roddick in 2006.

Meanwhile, top seed Iga Swiatek aims to secure her maiden last-eight appearance at Flushing Meadows when she takes on main-draw debutant Jule Niemeier, with the world number 108 seeking back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals having reached the same stage at Wimbledon.

Former runners-up Karolina Pliskova and Victoria Azarenka go head to head in a mouth-watering battle, while home favourites Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins look to extend their best performances here when they play Petra Kvitova and Aryna Sabalenka respectively.

The last remaining British player, Cameron Norrie has won nine consecutive sets to reach round four for the first time, with opponent Andrey Rublev coming through two five-setters to move to within a victory of a third Flushing Meadows quarter-final.

Jannik Sinner bids to complete the set of quarter-final appearances at Slams when he faces world number 73 Ilya Ivashka, who has already taken out Sam Querrey, Hubert Hurkacz and Lorenzo Musetti during his joint-best major performance.
