Serena Williams resumes what could be her US Open swansong with a tricky round-two clash against second seed Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.

It is widely believed that this will be Williams’ 21st and final appearance at Flushing Meadows, where she has been a champion on nine occasions.

Although, the 23-time major singles winner left the door open following her first-round victory over Danka Kovinic on Monday.

Williams triumphed 6-3 6-3 in an electric atmosphere generated by a record 29,402 supporters; the largest attendance for an evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 40-year-old will look to build on that momentum against St Petersburg champion Kontaveit, who is aiming to progress beyond the fourth round in New York for the first time.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Daniil Medvedev continues his title defence against Arthur Rinderknech, as French Open finalist Casper Ruud faces Tim van Rijthoven.

A decade on from his maiden Grand Slam triumph in the Big Apple, Andy Murray looks to build on an impressive straight-sets victory over 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo when he takes on Emilio Nava.

Murray’s compatriot Jack Draper bids to claim a scalp in sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Matteo Berrettini and Nick Kyrgios face French opposition in Hugo Grenier and Benjamin Bonzi respectively.

Over in the ladies’ draw, Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur’s quest to go one better at Flushing Meadows continues against Elizabeth Mandlik, with the Tunisian targeting a third trophy of the season having also triumphed in Madrid and Berlin.

Last year’s semi-finalist Maria Sakkari takes on Xiyu Wang and home favourite Coco Gauff locks horns with Elena Gabriela Ruse, as Birmingham and Nottingham champion Beatriz Haddad Maia plays 2019 winner Bianca Andreescu looking to build on her 6-0 6-0 rout of Anna Konjuh in round one.
