Rafael Nadal marks his US Open return when he faces Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

The 22-time major champion is back in New York for the first time since 2019, when he claimed his fourth title on Arthur Ashe.

Nadal also returns in a Grand Slam tournament, having withdrawn from his scheduled Wimbledon semi-final with Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury.

The Spaniard, who has already captured the Australian Open and French Open crowns, now looks to extend his perfect record in majors this year, having gone 19-0 so far.

And the 36-year-old is aiming to become only the fourth male player of the Open Era to triumph five times in the Big Apple after Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.

Although, he suffered a first-round exit in Cincinnati earlier this month, and that will encourage Slam main-draw debutant Hijikata in his quest to claim an incredible scalp.

Nadal’s compatriot Carlos Alcaraz is targeting another strong run in the Big Apple, where he made his breakthrough by reaching the quarter-finals last year.

The third seed, who has four titles to his name this season, takes on Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, while Wimbledon semi-finalist Cameron Norrie goes up against Benoit Paire.

Top seed Iga Swiatek begins her quest for a seventh trophy of a remarkable year with a tricky test against world number 56 Jasmine Paolini.

Swiatek embarked on incredible 37-match unbeaten streak that was ended at Wimbledon by Alize Cornet, who is set to appear in a record-breaking 63rd consecutive Grand Slam.

The Frenchwoman would love to mark the occasion by abruptly ended the title defence of reigning champion Emma Raducanu, who looks to successfully retain the crown she won in fairytale fashion 12 months ago.

Elsewhere, two-time champion Naomi Osaka takes on home favourite Danielle Collins, while Venus Williams’ 91st major appearance begins against Alison Van Uytvanck.

Marin Cilic – a winner here in 2014 – plays Maximilian Marterer, as Cincinnati champion Borna Coric looks to build on that momentum against Enzo Couacaud.
