Carlos Alcaraz looks to avoid his second defeat by Tommy Paul in as many weeks when they clash in the Western & Southern Open last 16.

It promises to be an intriguing Center-Court battle on Thursday when the world number one faces the home favourite, who boasts the edge in the head-to-head record.

Indeed, Paul has won two of their three previous meetings – one of those came as recently as last week, when he became only the fifth player to defeat Alcaraz this season in the National Bank Open quarter-finals.

The American joined an exclusive group of players to deny the Spaniard in 2023 that also includes Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie and Florian Marozsan.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Alcaraz, who was a straight-sets winner when they met in Miami earlier this year, will be keen to avenge that defeat as he targets his 51st match win of a wonderful season.

The top seed has also triumphed at Indian Wells, Madrid, Barcelona, Queen’s Club and Buenos Aires this term, and began his quest for a seventh ATP title of the campaign by battling past Jordan Thompson in the second round 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Though not quite to the same levels, Paul has enjoyed a strong 2023 of his own and subsequently climbed to a career-high 13th on the ATP Tour.

A runner-up in Acapulco and Eastbourne, he also reached the semi-finals of the Australian and National Bank Open as well as a further four quarter-finals.

And Paul has already broken new ground in Cincinnati this week by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic and Ugo Humbert without dropping a set, so will be confident of building on his momentum ahead of the US Open later this month.

The winner of this match will play either Stan Wawrinka or Max Purcell in the Western & Southern Open quarter-finals.

Play gets underway at around 8pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
